What Is Drama Therapy?

Drama therapy is an expressive and experiential therapy similar to art or music therapy. It is an embodied practice that is both active and experiential. Drama therapy uses techniques that are typically used in theater to achieve therapeutic goals, such as storytelling, improvisation, role play, creative writing, and guided visualizations. During sessions, individuals can mold new behaviors, rehearse new skills, and experience emotional and physical integration and expression. This can be helpful for children and adults alike looking to nurture personal growth and transform difficult behaviors. We all play roles in our lives - you do not need to be a performer or an actor to benefit from drama therapy! My approach is guided by current research in counseling and psychotherapy, but drama therapy provides an opportunity to express yourself in different ways because sometimes, the right words are hard to find.
